John Hoekenga, MA

John was the owner of a successful residential remodeling firm, but his giftedness as an encourager and his heart for people led him to accept an invitation to join the newly formed Shepherding Team at his church in 2008.  In this role John felt the need to be better equipped, as a first responder, to provide care for the people for whom he was responsible.  This prompted a decision to return to the classroom where he received a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling Ministries from Wheaton College.  In addition to his ongoing involvement on the Shepherding Team, John is currently serving on the Elder Board.  He is a member of the core leadership team of the Re/Engage Marriage Ministry, and is a certified Prepare-Enrich facilitator.  John has 34 years of experience as a business owner, but his passion for ministry led him to close his business to fully devote his energy toward counseling those who are hurting.  One could say that John has transitioned from the restoration and repair of homes to the restoration and repair of lives.

John offers pastoral counseling for adult and adolescent individuals, couples and families who are navigating the issues that life presents, including:

  • Crisis/Trauma
  • Grief/Loss
  • Engagement/Marriage
  • Conflict resolution
  • Stress/Anxiety management
  • Life adjustments
  • Doubt/Crisis of faith

“My desire is to facilitate healing for individuals, reconciliation for damaged human relationships, and the restoration of fellowship between mankind and God.  I believe the application of psychology must be filtered through the truth of Scripture.  I view the pastoral counselor/client relationship to be a partnership as we reflect on the beliefs, examine the thought processes, and explore the emotions that drive behavior.  I believe that all persons are created in the image of God and are to be treated with dignity and respect in a compassionate and honest manner.”

John is a husband to Janet, the father of two adult married children, and “Grandpa” to two beautiful granddaughters.   In his leisure time John enjoys hiking and fishing, surrounded by the nature God created.
